Album of photographs depicting an excursion to Miyanoshita and vicinity,
by three long-term Yokohama British residents and their wives, including 8 photographs of China, 14 from countries "en route" from England to Japan (including England, Gibraltar, Malta, Aden, Egypt and Penang), 47 of Japan, ranging from 213 x 269 mm. to 150 x 332 mm., 5 with hand-colouring, some fading and minor creasing, contemporary half morocco, slightly rubbed, 4to, c.1885.

***A fascinating album showing expatriate leisure time in Meiji, Japan. The three British men are Arthur T.Watson (in the 1870 Japan Directory as an assistant for the Yokohama-based medical dispensary North, Thompson & Co.); B.J.S.Brinkworth (appears first as manager for Yokohama branch of Kelly & Co. in 1879), and John H.Curtis (who appears with his wife in the list of Yokohama residents in 1880). Apart from portraits of the group, there are also good portraits by Uchida Kuichi of the Emperor & Empress; an interesting view of a Japanese shooting group; views of the Fujiya and Naraya hotels; views of Western-style taken en route. The exclusion of Mrs Brinkworth from many of the photographs would seem to imply she was the photographer, and would date it around 1885 (the time of her arrival)..
