Title: Manuscript Document, unsigned, from his reign as Pope
Author: Benedict XII [Piero Fraricesco Orsini] (1649-1730) Description: Manuscript Document (unsigned) from his reign as Pope. One page, 15¾x19¾", on vellum. Not translated. An impressive document with ornate seal in lower left and titled "VINCENTIUS" in manuscript in the top margin. Benedict XIII (at first named Benedict XIV due to the Anti-pope Benedict XIII, Pedro de Luna) became Pope in 1724. In 1667 Orsini became a Dominican (as Vincentius Maria), studied theology and philosophy, was made a cardinal in 1672 and archbishop of Benevento in 1686. As Pope he endeavoured to put a stop to the decadent lifestyles of the Italian priesthood and of the cardinalate. He also abolished the lottery in Rome. A man fond above all of asceticism and religious celebrations, according to Cardinal Lambertini (later Pope as Benedict XIV) he "did not have any idea about how to rule". In 1727 he inaugurated the famous Spanish Steps and founded the University of Camerino.
