Third Edition of Frankenstein 1831

Title: Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus
Author: Shelley, Mary W[ollstonecraft]
Description: xii, 202 pp. New Introduction (for this edition) by Mary Shelley. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece and additional pictorial title page. (8vo) 6¾x4, later half polished blue calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece, top edge gilt. "Revised, Corrected, and Illustrated with a New Introduction, by the Author." First Illustrated Edition and Third Edition overall.Rare early edition (originally published in 1818), with a new introduction. Part of Bentley's Standard Novels Series. The eight page introduction describes the now famous discussion between Byron, Shelley, and Polidori, with Mary a silent listener, which helped spawn "Frankenstein," one of the greatest literary inventions of all time. "At first I thought but of a few pages – of a short tale; but Shelley urged me to develope [sic] the idea at greater length. I certainly did not owe the suggestion of one incident, but scarcely of one train of feeling, to my husband, and yet but for his incitement, it would never have taken the form in which it was presented to the word." See Sadleir 3734a; and Wolff 6280a.
