This piece is an optical illusion portrait of Jack Nicholson, made by using the images of penguins. Doug Auld's art is a magical marriage of cul- ture and nature. The seeds of his unique vision took root in childhood, when he brought all kinds of creatures home, from huge tur- tles and frogs to the snake that escaped its cage and was discovered by his shocked mother behind the washing machine. Escher's use of contrary motion and negative space, Dali's paranoiac-critical method of creative seeing, and Chuck Close's system of building images out of clusters of accumulated marks can all be considered art historical bloodlines to this work.
