Pair of embroidered English mail bag facings, late 18th century, having coat of arms applique on silk damask. The inscription at the crest: ''G 3d'' crown in center and ''R'' rampant lion and reared horse with glass eyes centered with motto: ''HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE'', banner at the base reads: ''DIEU ET MON DROIT.'' with fringed border. Panel: 18''h x 20''w, overall: 22.5''h x 24.5''w. Provenance: Consigned by descendent of Josiah Paine (1760-1825) of Portland, Maine who was a mail contractor and had a mail run from Boston to Portland. (2 tassels in office)
