CIVIL WAR - CREWS, Charles C. Autograph letter signed "C. C. Crews Col. Comdg." to Captain B. A. Terrett, attached to the staff of William Wirt Allen, reporting on intelligence relating to Sherman's movements.
Matthew's Bluff, SC: 2 February 1865. 1 p. Headquarters Crews' Cavalry Brigade stationery (254 x 204 mm). Endorsed on vero by William Wirt Allen. Condition: minor marginal chips, creases, very light toning. awaiting the advance of sherman's left wing on the savannah river. On the second day of Sherman's march into the Carolinas, Crews -stationed along the Savannah River and awaiting the approach of the federal army - writes to Captain B. A. Terrett, attached to the staff of William Wirt Allen: "I have the honor to inform you that one of my cousins left Lt. Col. Watts 2 miles this side of Brighton . The enemy had not made any demonstration this morn. This is the latest intelligence I have from him. Have instructed him to communicate with me frequently." Sherman began his march the previous day riding out in front of Beaufort, SC with his right wing commanded by O. O. Howard. The left wing, under Henry Slocum, was attempting to cross the flooded Savannah River only a few miles downstream from Crew's position. Within a week, Sherman's army would overwhelm South Carolina forces and destroy the railroads to isolate Charleston, forcing the city's evacuation.
