CIVIL WAR - DAVIS, David. Autograph legal document signed declaring ownership of his Illinois property. Dewitt County, Ill: 24 May [c.1860]. 4 pp. on one folded sheet (204 x 121 mm). Legal document notarized and dated by Charles H. Dinnet of Dewitt County. Condition: faint fold lines, else fine. before joining lincoln in washington, davis settles personal illinois business. The letter states that Davis purchased the property from Clifton H. Moore in November of 1855 and patents belonging to them were stored in the National Bank of Bloomington. Davis, Lincoln's early friend from the Illinois law circuit, was his de facto campaign manager of 1860 and also the executor of his estate after his assassination. Davis went on to serve on the Bench of the Supreme Court and also served 7 years in the Senate.
