CIVIL WAR - LEE, Stephen Dill. Manuscript document signed "S. D. Lee Major General" an oath of allegiance to the State of Alabama, sworn to by his 1st Lt. Stephen E. M. Underhill and signed by Lee as a witness. Tuscaloosa, AL: 25 April 1864. 1 p. (306 x 188 mm). Endorsed by both Alabama Governor Thomas Hill Watts and A. G. Riggs. Condition: folds, a few toned spots, else quite crisp and clean. lee witnesses the oath of allegiance of his scottish first lieutenant to the state of alabama and the confederacy. An excellent early document from the early Confederacy, an ad-hoc manuscript oath of allegiance: "[Underhill] solemnly swear[s] to support the Constitution of the State of Alabama of which said State I intend to become a citizen; that I will well and faithfully serve the Confederate States of America, and maintain and support the Constitution and laws thereof; and that I do renounce all allegiance and obedience to any foreign Government, State Sovereignty, Price, or Potentate, and particularly all allegiance and obedience to Her Britannic Majesty Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland..." Underhill, a native of Scotland, resigned his commission in the British army to fight for the Confederacy. He became an aide-de-camp to Lee and was later cited for gallantry for his actions at Vicksburg in 1863. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
