CIVIL WAR - STEPHENS, Alexander. Autograph letter signed to Governor Brown, a letter of introduction. Richmond: 1 September 1862. 1p., on folded sheet with integral blank (227 x 140 mm). Condition: folds, light browning along edges. war-date letter signed by confederate vice president alexander stephens. Letter addressed to Governer Joseph Brown of Georgia introducing Captain William F. Lynch who will "explain the object of his visit. I need not add that we all feel deep interest in the early success of his enterprise." Captain Lynch, a former Captian of the U.S. Navy, served the Confederates as a commander of the batteries at Aquia Creek, the naval defenses of Virginia and North Carolina, before leading the "Mosquito Fleet" in February of 1862 in the battle of Roanoke Island.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
