Richmond: 1 September 1862. 1p., on folded sheet with integral blank (227 x 140 mm). Condition: folds, light browning along edges. war-date letter signed by confederate vice president alexander stephens. Letter addressed to Governer Joseph Brown of Georgia introducing Captain William F. Lynch who will "explain the object of his visit. I need not add that we all feel deep interest in the early success of his enterprise." Captain Lynch, a former Captian of the U.S. Navy, served the Confederates as a commander of the batteries at Aquia Creek, the naval defenses of Virginia and North Carolina, before leading the "Mosquito Fleet" in February of 1862 in the battle of Roanoke Island.
