CIVIL WAR - WALKER, Aldace F. The Vermont Brigade in the Shenandoah Valley, 1864. Burlington, VT: The Free Press Association, 1869. 8vo. 3 maps. Publisher's rust-colored cloth, lettered in gilt on spine. Condition: title page detached, front endpaper lightly soiled. first edition; inscribed by the author to james h. walbridge, a colorful colonel of the 2nd vermont infantry. The 2nd was the longest serving Vermont regiment, in action from February on 1863 to April of 1864. The Vermont Brigade was one of the strongest support Brigades during the Shenandoah campaign and the 2nd Vermont was later was rewarded for its role in the repulsion of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Walbridge had made a small fortune in California and had operated a printing press in Sacramento before the War. He served with the 2nd Vermont at Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettsyburg.
