DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. Published in The General Magazine: or, Compleat Repository... Vol. 1. London: G. Allen, January-December 1776. 12 issues in one. 8vo (200 x 124 mm). Engraved plates include folding map of the east coast by Bowen, city plan of Quebec and folding plans of Boston, New York and Halifax harbor. Contemporary calf and marbled boards, red morocco spine label. Condition: some very light marginal finger-soiling and intermittent spotting, loss to lower corner of 1 page affecting a few letters, occasional contemporary notes in ink; board edges rubbed. early english periodical appearance of the declaration of independence. Published in the August, 1776 issue under a running title of "Declaration of the American Congress," this general magazine of arts and politics also printed the Articles of Confederation in the January issue (pp. 24-26). Interestingly, in the July issue carried a strident, unsigned essay from Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" which must have taken a few English readers aback. "But admitting that we were all of English descent, what does it amount to? Nothing.... Hath your house been burnt? Hath your property been destroyed before your face?"
