JEFFERSON, Thomas. Notes on the State of Virginia. Philadelphia: Printed and sold by Prichard and Hall, 1788. 244 pp., 4to (192 x 120 mm). Folding table. Contemporary calf, rebacked and recased, preserving the original pastedowns. Condition: table with loss to lower corner and split along one fold, foxing and browning throughout, a few pages with repaired tears; rebacked, restoration at the tips. Provenance: Frederick-Town Library (early booklabel); Phenix Library (booklabel); L. R. Boyd, Lynchburg, Va. (ink signature). first american edition. First published privately in France, Jefferson's Notes was written "in answer to queries proposed to the author, by a foreigner of distinction [Barbe-Marbois]." The book describes in detail early Virginia history, geography, native Americans, and current state of affairs. This is the only book-length work published by Jefferson during his lifetime.
