Hand-colored outline and with the cartouche additionally colored. Condition: browning and staining, marginal chips and tears, loss to lower right-hand corner, two small tears in tip of Japan, small, repaired insect hole off the coast of New England, extensive reinforcement and restoration on verso. Sold not subject to return. detailed map of the western hemisphere, showing california as an island. Much of what is now the United States is shown belonging to British Canada and the Spanish territories of Florida and New Mexico. The scene in the cartouche reflects European attitudes of the period toward the peoples and natural resources of the Americas; their subjugation is represented by the image of a tribal chieftain ordering villagers to present baskets of grain and ingots of gold as tribute to the viewer.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
