MAPS - COLTON, J. H. Colton's Atlas of the World. New York: J. H. Colton and Company, 1856. 2 volumes, folio (467 x 405 mm). Vignette titles, 111 map sheets (most hand-colored, some double-page). Publisher's morocco-backed cloth, covers stamped in gilt and blind. Condition: a few minor edge tears (including one to the map of Texas), some age toning in the margins of the text, maps generally clean; worn at extremities, minor spotting to the covers. Provenance: C. Moore (signature dated 1856 on the front free endpaper). "Initially, Colton's atlas was published by subscription and in parts, then in a two volume edition with the first volume issued in 1855 and the second volume in 1856. [An 1856 edition followed, issued in one or two volumes.] This atlas was the first world atlas produced by Colton, after many years of issuing pocket maps, wall maps, guides, and maps for books. The atlas was one of the finest and most accurate of the period" (Rumsey). The first volume treats America and the second volume covers the rest of the world. Volume one here with the additional Baltimore: James Waters imprint; volume two with the additional London: Truebner and Company imprint.
