PRESIDENTS - WASHINGTON, George. Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States. Troy, NY: Published for the Washington Benevolent Society, Printed by Parker and Bliss, 1812. 12mo (171 x 101 mm). Admittance leaf to Society bound in, engraved frontispiece portrait of Washington. Contemporary marbled boards with calf backstrip. Condition: hinges cracked with tape repairs to pastedowns, slight dampstain at upper margin, offset to title from frontispiece, clipping affixed to rear pastedown, remains of pencil ownership signature; spine repaired with layer of clear tape, boards lightly rubbed. Provenance: Seth Richards (admittance leaf to the Saratoga branch of the Washington Benevolent Society bound in at front, this document dated 26 July 1812 and signed in manuscript by both the president and secretary of the organization). As Washington planned "to terminate the career of my public life ... I owe to my beloved country for the many honors it has conferred upon me." Washington's gracious farewell addressed, dated 19 September 1796, was never delivered orally but issued in newspapers in the following days. The first president goes on to warn against factionalism and entangling alliances. Sabin 101640. [With:] Pictorial and printed silk ribbon pinned to front pastedown reading "PRO PATRIA" above bust portrait of Washington with an angel placing a wreath upon his head.
