SLAVERY - CARROL, E. A. Manuscript law document in appeal of Texas sherrif accused of letting a slave escape. Henderson County, Texas: c. 1860. 3 folded sheets, bound by silk ribbon (300 x 190 mm). Titled E.A. Carrol Appellant vs. State Apellee, No. 2525. Condition: folds, some slight soiling. Appeal in favor of Henderson County Sheriff, E.A. Carrol, stating that he did not act negligently when a slave named Joiner escaped from jail under his watch. As the weather was quite cold, and Joiner became sick, the document argues that Carrol acted properly to see to his health. This resulted in the escape and eventual re-capture of Joiner by Carrol. Brought up on charges for this event, the current document was filed in the appelate court. View Bloomsbury Auctions next auction.Similar lots up for auction |
