SOUTH CAROLINA - BROOKS, Preston. Autograph letter signed to President Polk, seeking a Mexican War commission for a friend. Edgefield C[ourt] House, [SC]: 27 September 1846. 2 pp., folded sheet with integral blank (250 x 202 mm). Condition: folds, pencil lines, remnants of wax seal, small tape repairs with little loss. additionally signed by francis pickens and james carroll. This letter is a petition on a behalf of William H. Atkinson for a lieutenancy in the army. Atkinson had been so eager to serve that "he went at his own expense to Vera Cruz." Brooks, Pickens, and Carroll were all prominent South Carolina politicians who eventually served the Confederate cause (with Preston Brooks famously assaulting the abolitionist Senater Charles Sumner on the Senate floor in 1856).ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
