METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER STUDIOS. MGM Re-Presents The Wizard of Oz. Untrimmed color lithographed movie poster on card for the re-release of The Wizard of Oz, Home Theatre, August 20, [1948] (560 x 355 mm). Condition: slightly darkened, folded and creased at middle, corners creased and worn not affecting print. Provenance: Fred M. Meyer Collection. MGM considered The Wizard of Oz with a production cost of $3,000,000 in 1939 one of its prestige pictures and did not expect to make a profit during its initial release. Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch of the West) asked the producer Mervyn Leroy how long he thought it would last. When he told her about ten years, she said, "You're crazy!" It did not land in the black until the re-release in 1948-1949. This poster is similar to advertising for the original 1939 release except that Judy Garland's name is more prominent than before as she had become one of MGM's biggest stars by 1948.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
