GLOBE - PHILIP & SON, LTD., George Philips' 18 inch Merchant Shippers' Globe. London: [c. 1920]. Color-lithographed terrestrial library globe (diameter 450 mm) made up of eighteen gores and showing principal shipping routes and their distances, railways and submarine communication cables, with brass meridian ring mounted on original tripod hardwood stand; horizon bar with onlaid papers supported by three cabriole legs on pad feet and two tri-armed cabriole stretchers, the upper stretcher supporting a central hanging finial, the lower supporting a glass-boxed compass rosette (overall height 143 cm). Condition: on globe, discolored varnish, abrasions along equator, cracking and occasional gouging; on stand, fading and peeling horizon papers, discolored varnish with chipping and occasional loss, leg coming loose from stretcher. an interesting early-twentieth-century library globe showing the various european colonies, trading routes and commercial information between world war i and world war ii, in an elegant queen anne-style stand.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
