Together 4 engraved maps (1st 1000 x 661 mm with fold-out extension; 2nd 665 x 500 mm; 3rd map 996 x 656 mm; 4th map 1008 x 686 mm). 1st and 2nd maps surveyed by C. Bullock, J. Ward and others of the Royal Navy; 2nd and 3rd maps surveyed by A.E. Ploix of the French Imperial Marine. Condition: all maps curled from rolling, marginal browning and some wear to edges; on 1st map, small marginal tear and marginal creasing to fold-out; on 3rd map, creasing to lower right-hand corner; on 4th map, occasional spotting, marginal creasing, chipping and tearing to upper and lower edges, loss to upper- and lower-lefthand corners, dark discoloration to right side. series of 4 british nautical charts showing china's northeast coast. [With two others:] JAMES, Sir Henry. Pekin and Its Environs ... London: War Office, Topographical Department, 1860. Engraved map with hand-coloring (880 x 597 mm). Condition: browning and spotting, some tears, splits and holes in legend and left side of map. map showing beijing and surrounding topography copied from the survey of colonel ladyjenski of the imperial russian army. [And:] BEMERON, K. Map of Chih-li Province ... [Russia]: 1871. Engraved map, no. 38 of 45 from a bound atlas (733 x 995 mm). Condition: central horizontal and vertical folds, browning and heavy marginal foxing, some chipping and tearing along right-hand edge at former bind, loss to portion of subheading just below main title. interesting cyrillic russian map of the qing-era province of chih-li featuring three large-scale insets, including a view of central Beijing (Peking) along with the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, and the city of Tianjin (Tien-Tsin). The present-day province of Hebei encompasses much of the territory of Chih-li (or Zhili), a name derived from the direct rule of the Imperial Court. (7)
