GEORGE DEWEY, American Naval Admiral, Hero of the Spanish-American War.
Check Signed, "Geo. Dewey," black ink, March 3, 1893, Washington, DC, 3" x 7.75, Choice Extremely Fine. Drawn on the Washington-based bank Riggs & Co., the check is partially printed and then filled in and signed by Dewey. Dewey, hero of the Spanish-American War, is the only person in the history of the United States to attain the rank Admiral of the Navy, the senior-most rank in that branch of the service.
