March 30, 1878 Autograph Letter Signed, "Alex Gardner Secy", in purple ink on ornate Masonic Mutual Relief Association letterhead, Washington, D.C., 10" x 8", Extremely Fine. Writing as the Secretary of the Masonic association, Gardner sends this letter to a "J. K. Wheeler". In part: "…Your favor of the 13th… was laid before the Board of Directors at the last meeting, they think with you that there can be little doubt but the daughter of Edward Wadsworth is the Miss Martha Wadsworth of Hartford, Conn… Inclosed find check for $1.50. I have notified Brom Wadsworth that when a guardian is appointed I will send draft and receipts to you trusting you will excuse the liberty…" Boldly penned, spindle holes at extreme top margin, else near fine condition. The Wadsworth family were among the founders of Hartford, and were major philanthropists. Gardner writings are rare, extremely so in signed autograph letters. Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) was best known for his photographs of the Civil War and his portraits of President Lincoln. Gardner worked for Matthew Brady's studio until 1862. Second only to Brady for his fame and importance as a Civil War photographer, he published Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
