Josiah Gilbert Holland Autograph and Original Envelope

JOSIAH GILBERT HOLLAND.
March 28 (1876), Card Signed, "J. G. Holland," 2.75" x 4," Choice Mint. Writer and co-founder of Scribner's Magazine, Josiah Holland, has penned his graceful 3" signature on this card, which is in mint condition due to its having been kept in its original envelope for more than a century. The envelope, included in this lot, is addressed to autograph collector Edward P. Lord in Cleveland, Ohio. This envelope is in nice condition, just as it arrived at Lord's address. A very nice autograph with an established provenance. (2 items).

Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881) was a novelist and poet, who helped to found and edit Scribner's Monthly (afterwards the Century Magazine), in which appeared his novels, Arthur Bonnicastle, The Story of Sevenoaks, and Nicholas Minturn. In poetry he wrote Bitter Sweet (1858), Kathrina, and many others. Holland and his wife were frequent correspondents and family friends of poet Emily Dickinson.
