Sending Troops to the West Coast via Panama IRWIN MCDOWELL. December 5, 1855, Document Signed "Irwin McDowell" as Assistant Adjutant General, one page, 4.25" x 6.5", Choice Fine. McDowell signs General Orders No. 7 from General Winfield Scott reassigning the 9th Infantry Regiment to Washington Territory. The orders read, in part: "...The 9th Regiment of Infantry will proceed, via Panama, to San Francisco, California; and, --if not otherwise directed, at that place... will repair thence... to Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory...Transportation will be furnished form New York, to be at Fort Monroe, Va..." The document bears a few minor holes and tiny chips at right margin, light toning at extreme margins, otherwise quite clean and bright. Fort Vancouver, situated in modern-day Oregon on the Columbia River, was established in 1825 by Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trading post. The U.S. Army established a barracks there in 1849 and was the temporary home of numerous military luminaries including U.S. Grant, Philip H. Sheridan, George Crook, and George C. Marshall.
