Two Speeches Commemorating the Founding of Plymouth 1806 & 1820, A Bound Pair of Speeches by Abiel Holmes and Daniel Webster, Commemorating the First Settlement at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, Choice Extremely Fine. This original pair of printed speeches are bound in half-straight grain morocco, with marbled covers and page edges. Bound first in this collection is an 1825 printing of Daniel Webster's 1820 speech titled, "A Discourse Delivered at Plymouth December 22, 1820, In Commemoration of the First Settlement of New England." This is the 3rd Edition, printed by Wells & Lilly in Boston, and runs to 76 pages. The second item, written by Abiel Holmes, is titled, "A Discourse Delivered at Plymouth, 22 December 1806 at the Anniversary Commemoration of the First Landing of the Fathers in 1620." This appears to be the original 1806 printing, containing 32 pages. This work by Holmes is much rarer than that by Webster. We were unable to find a single sale of the Holmes discourse in the past 20 years. The bookplate of a former owner appears inside the front cover. There is a repaired corner on title page of the 1820 discourse, a couple minor repairs on other pages, and some minor water staining in the margin of the 1806 discourse, otherwise a fine pair in a very nice 19th century binding. Probably much rarer than our modest estimate indicates. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
