Black History
18th Century Print: An Englishman Sells His Slave Mistress!

c. 1790s, Print: "An Englishman from Barbados Sells His Slave Mistress," Choice Very Fine.
Engraved by "de la Rue", this uncolored copperplate engraving features two European men exchanging a sack of money for the sale of a slave woman who, shackled with a chain running from her ankle to a metal-hooked collar around her neck, covers her face in grief as she turns away. In the background, other slaves unload cargo on the shore and a view of a castle and palm trees on a cliff can be seen in the distance. The caption reads: "Un Anglais de la Barbade vend sa Maitresse" (An Englishman from Barbados Sells His Mistress") the print was apparently produced by French artist Nicolas Delaunay (1739-1792) after a painting by Jean-Michel Moreau. The lightly toned print image measures 5.75" x 3.75", on laid paper measuring 9" x 6". A sharp, detailed print, depicting the trauma of the slave trade in the West Indies.
