Slaves Hired Out to Support Orphaned Children in Georgia 1829-1830, Manuscript Ledger Page, Recording the Hiring Out of Slaves in Support of Orphaned Children in Monroe County, Georgia, Extremely Fine. This original, handwritten, 12.5" x 7.25" document is ledger page 99-100, covering part of 1829 and 1830, in the accounts of Matthew McCrary, guardian of the minor children of William McCrary, deceased. Among the items listed in both years, are the amounts received for the hiring out of various slaves, including Old Peter, Young Peter, Ned, Young Sam, Old Sam, Bazzeu, Ben, John, Lucy, Patience, Jude, Henry and Harriet. Several of the amounts, around $70, appear to be for annual hire -- the value of a year's work by a slave. Lightly age toned, this document is in excellent condition, without holes or tears. A clear account of the economics of slavery in the Old South. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
