THE ADMISSION OF KANSAS INTO THE UNION March 12, 1858, "SPEECH OF HON. ANTHONY KENNEDY, OF MARYLAND, THE ADMISSION OF KANSAS INTO THE UNION AS A STATE UNDER THE LECOMPTON CONSTITUTION," Printed by the Congressional Globe Office, Very Fine. Disbound, 9.0" x 5.75", pamphlet, 7 pages. Pages partially separated at folds with minor age toning. "While I have all the feeling that I am uttering now for southern interests, and for the South, born, reared, and educated as I have been, in the South, yet let me say that no senator on this floor has a heart more expanded an dmore thoroughly in consonance with all the principles of the Union than I have... Let us take away the exciting subject of dispute and quarell...and give it to the people of Kansas to settle. For these reasons, sir, I shall vote for the admission of Kansas under the Lecompton constitution." Kennedy is a man with strong Southern emotions, with no conflict with slavery, however, his love of the Constitution is stronger, and makes him vote in favor of Kansas as a state. A wonderful, rare speech. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
