During 1952 and 1953 Robert Rauschenberg traveled through Italy and Morocco. The mundane need for laundered shirts provided Rauschenberg with material for a series of surrealist inspired works. His laundered shirts were returned on cardboard providing an interesting and easily transportable backboard for collages. In 1990 these works became the maquettes for twenty-eight prints completed at Styria Studio in New York. The prints where executed on a scale fifty percent enlarged from the original works, resulting in sizes from 14" x 7" to 21" x 8". Each work includes collage elements (i.e. feathers, paper, cloth), which relates to the surrealist inclusion of the found object. The artworks are delicate and elegant because the collage elements are kept at a minimum. There is hand coloring involved in each print.
