William J. Bartko (American, 1905 - 1989)

High Desert Trees.

Watercolor. 1939. Signed and dated, lower right. 14 1/4 x 19 3/4 in. (362 x 502 mm). Born in Toledo, Ohio to Hungarian parents, William Bartko was a painter of desert landscapes, especially scenes with smoke trees. For much of his life he earned a living as a commercial artist for Foster & Kleiser in Los Angeles. When he retired in 1961, he moved to Borrego Springs and devoted himself to fine art painting until his death in 1989. He was a member of the Desert Art Center in Palm Springs.
