19th C. ITALIAN OIL ON CANVAS SIGNED "VINCENT"

Sign In to see what this sold for

19th CENTURY ITALIAN OIL ON CANVAS OF A NOBLEWOMAN WITH HER DOG. SIGNED "VINCENT". Great mystery surrounds this painting which was restored by Anthony Gare Listi in the mid-1980's. Mr. Listi believed that the painting was done by Francois Andre Vincent or his father Francois Ellie Vincent. The younger Vincent was one of the founding members of the Academie des Beaux-Arts and in 1790 was appointed Master Drawings to Louis XVI. While doing the restoration, Mr. Listi found that he was dealing with an overpainting. While painstakingly working on the painting, he did research and came to believe that the subject of the portrait was either Caroline of the Habsburgs or Marie Caroline Bonaparte, the Granduchess of Berg and Cleves and the Queen Consort of Naples. It was proven not to be one of the Habsburgs, but the Bonaparte question remains unanswered. The mystery remains. The painting is masterfully done and very old, possibly late 18th or early 19th century. Height: 41 in. by Width: 31 in. by Depth: 1 1/2 in.
