PAIR OF FREE-BLOWN TRUMPET VASES, unusual deep swirling smoky amethyst, each deep slender bowl with an inward folded rim, and joined by a wafer to a short baluster-form stem and applied circular foot with polished pontil mark. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co . 1840-1860. 12 3/4" and 13" high, 4" and 4 1/8" diameter rims, 4 1/2" diameter bases.
Reference: Published B & K III, figs. 3002a & b, and described as "Two of the best examples of free-blown vases from Sandwich we have ever seen." Provenance: The Duff & Molly Allen Collection. Joan E. Kaiser, 8/26/94 Note: As pointed out by Barlow and Kaiser, these two vases were obviously produced from the same peculiarly colored batch of glass; so despite the slight differences in size, they were most likely originally purchased as a pair.
