PRESSED ARCH DIMINUTIVE VASE, medium amethyst, flared and gauffered eight-flute rim and short conical bowl joined by a crude wafer to an octagonal baluster-form standard and square base. Probably New England. 1850-1870. 8 3/8" high, 4 3/8" diameter rim, 2 3/4" square base.
Provenance: The Duff & Molly Allen Collection. Stephen/Douglas Antiques, 8/15/87 Note: A most peculiar little vase which we could not locate in any of the standard references. While its form and proportions are very pleasing, a closer examination reveals an overabundance of striations and waviness to the glass along with a large network of annealing lines to the base. Its base is slightly larger than the similar small Sandwich bases and the top of its standard is without a knop or other wide surface to support the wafer. Its crudeness would seem to indicate that it is the product of a small fledgling glass house Condition reportUndamaged except for two small flakes to the upper base edge and a small chip/roughness to one lower base corner
