FREE-BLOWN AND PRESSED STAND LAMP, colorless, conical font joined by a bold bladed wafer to a large hollow-knop stem, which is joined by another bladed wafer to a square standard with four animal-head-topped pillars surrounding the central column, the quatrefoil base raised on four tall ribbed feet and with interior prisms, with a pewter collar and double-tube whale oil burner which is not attached. Probably New England. 1830-1845. 11" high to top of collar, 3 3/8" square foot.
Reference: Base as Elsholz, lot #1299.
Provenance: The Duff & Molly Allen Collection. Exhibited Sandwich Glass Museum, 1993. H. Richard Strand, 4/25/92
Note: It is said that the animal heads on this most unusual base represent two penguins and two polar bears, possibly in response to the supposed sightings of the same on broken glaciers which floated into the Boston harbor in the 1830s

Condition report

Near proof having only a few minor chips and flakes to the lower feet
