RARE MIDWESTERN TULIP CANDLESTICK, well pooled fiery opalescent, four-petal socket with lower leaflets and a bud-like extension, joined by a wafer to a short tapered prismatic stem and four-step hexagonal base, socket probably originally fitted with a pewter cup insert. Probably Pittsburgh. 1850-1870. 9 1/2" high, 4 1/8" diameter base overall.
Reference: Innes, pp. 308, 309, item No. 54. Provenance: The Duff & Molly Allen Collection. eBay, 10/12/00 Note: An extremely rare candlestick, not photographed in any standard reference. The illustration noted above is from H. L. Ringwalt's 2nd Annual Circular which is dated 1860. Ringwalt was a Pittsburgh, PA glass merchant who had formerly been a partner in the Curling, Robertson & Co. glasshouse. His circular illustrated and listed 155 items, most of which appear to be products of J. B. Lyon, but the publication probably contains items from other area glass houses as well. The only other examples of this French inspired stick of which I am aware, are a colorless pair that are currently in a private collection Condition reportUndamaged except for a 1" horizontal check in the socket below the rim
