The Murrey-Marbury-Dodge Dollhouse

America, ca. 1830. This large and historic dollhouse has an impressive provenance, having remained within the same family for approximately 150 years. The house was originally built for Juliet A. Murrey of Mount Lubentia (also known as Castle Magruder), a distinguished late eighteenth century home near the town of Largo, Prince Georges County, Maryland. The house was passed to her daughter, Meta Marbury, then to a son, Francis Chapman Dodge and finally to Kathryn Murphy, and was housed at Mt. Lubentia until 1982. The dignified Federal-style exterior is painted with lightly textured faux brickwork and features generously sized glazed four-pane windows on both the hinged front and the sides, and an elegant raised paneled faux door with a striking neo-classical fanlight under a Georgian pediment. The roof has a shingled effect created by narrow lapped boards and two painted brick chimneys are featured at each end of the house. The hinged facade opens to reveal four very spacious rooms with original fireplaces, moldings, built-in shelves in the painted kitchen and vintage wallpapers in three rooms. The house rests on a newer stand for better access. Articles featuring this house have appeared in several magazines, most recently in Antique Doll Collector. 48" W, 60" T, 28" D.
