This canister is identical to those used in Command Module Environmental Systems on Apollo missions to the Moon. Also known as carbon dioxide absorber element, or scrubber it contains LiOH to absorb carbon dioxide & carbon to remove odors from cabin air. Two were normally used at a time, they were alternately changed every 12 hours. This type of LiOH canister was made famous by the Apollo 13 mission, where the astronauts were forced to move into the Lunar Module (LM) for most of the flight. Having exhausted the capacity of the LM LiOH canisters , the Command Module (CM) canisters were needed. However, the square CM canisters did not fit into the round LM openings, So a workaround was devised using the CM canisters with hoses, tape & other items. The canister offered here is about 7x7"x5" with 'GROUND TEST ONLY' in red on side and parts tag reading: Part: 813540-2-1/Serial: 108-298/Order: NAS-9-150/NASA: 004000108298/REF SPEC: ME901-0218-0051, Airesearch Manufacturing Co. Circular connection very obvious, some surface corrosion & dents as would be expected, still a great historic piece of Apollo equipment with a real story to tell. Ideal for either collector or museum who wants to put together an Apollo exhibit."
