This is a spectacular and Rare antique squat shape square neck pitcher by Phoenix Glass ca. 1886 - 1888. It is the distinctive 10 panel Phoenix Drape Optic pattern in Ruby Die-Away to light amber over opal glass. Originally mistakenly identified as Hobbs Brockunier's Wheeling drape, or Wheeling Peachblow, the Phoenix Drape is the only glass of its period to exhibit the pronounced raised exterior surface created by the deep cuts in the optic mold, formed when the gather was blown to its final shape. The characteristic of the bleeding die-away color density is linked to the U.S Patent application #218,308 filed on November 8, 1886 by the famed artisan Joseph Webb. The effect is created by blowing a bubble through a gather of two colors of glass so that the gather is both lengthened as well as expanded. Phoenix is the only recorded company to use this technique combining an exterior glass of crystal plus heat sensitive opal colors in the period from 1886 to ca. 1888.URANIUM- Phoenix Art Glass / Leland Marple P. 14 , PP 78 - 81 -- part of a collection of art glass to be sold live on eBayLiveAuctions on Oct 5th at 1pm, Andy & Rob Collection.
