The fabulous John Derbyshire Works once situated in Manchester produced a paperweight in 1874 of a lion modeled on the Landseer lion. This magnificent lion is in rare yellow/green uranium or "vaseline" color and is superb condition; so many of these pieces became damaged. The lion is comprised of a lion at rest looking forward sitting on a ribbed plinth, with John Derbyshire anchor registration mark and diamond lozenge being a class III produced on the 3rd day of July 1874 in parcel batch 4. The lion measures 5.25" in height by 7" in length by 4.5" across. The condition is magnificent with a few small flaws in the front of the base that would have been caused in the manufacturing process causing 3 tiny straw marks on the base of the plinth. It's exceptionally rare to find one in such fine condition, most examples being badly chipped and cracked. This is truly a magnificent piece in the scarce yellow uranium enriched vaseline glass and examples like this are always a centerpiece for the advanced vaseline glass collector.
