This is about the rarest of the rare when it comes to early and special uranium / vaseline glass. This is cut glass from the Biedermeier era, a period of time that dated from approximately 1825-1845 in Bohemia. It was only during the very last part of this era that uranium glass came on the market. Estimated time period, based on cutting, style, and in comparison to other known pieces from this era would place a date about 1838-1845. The person who is generally considered the first one to use uranium salts in glass for a colorant was Joseph Riedel, who named his two colors ANNAGELB and ANNAGRUN. He named these two colors after his wife, Anna. The English translation is ANNA'S YELLOW and ANNA'S GREEN. This cut glass is flint glass and is deeply cut with a series of crosscuts, diamonds, crosshatching, and drapery patterns. The top rim is sawtooth-notched. The piece is complimented with a metal base and the piece is anchored with a single vintage carriage bolt to the inside bottom of the bowl. This is also a very large piece for cut uranium glass of this time period. Modern day collectors would call this vaseline glass. The piece is more yellow than it appears in the photo, due to the high intensity photography lights used to take these photos. No marking could be found on the metal base, but it is original to the piece. Very minor wear to the glass, and commensurate wear to the metal base, considering it's age. Please study the photos very carefully. YES, it glows brilliantly under a blacklight! similar examples of the this style of glassware is shown in VASELINE GLASS: CANARY TO CONTEMPORARY by David A. Peterson, copyright 2002 by Antique Publications -- part of a collection of art glass to be sold live on eBayLiveAuctions on Oct 5th at 1pm, Andy & Rob Collection.
