Making glass since the 1760's, ths family moved to Ellison St. in 1850, establishing themselves as one of the largest producers of glass in England. After a number of new pressed designs, in 1877 they introduced another of their most popular colors, Patent Ivory Queen's Ware, that looks like carved ivory . It was very expensive to make and after the first year, they had to reduce the price of their items as they were not being sold. Despite the original marketing problems, Queens Ivory is one of the most enduring of Sowerby's lines. It is Uranium oxide rich and glows brilliantly under black light. -- part of a collection of art glass to be sold live on eBayLiveAuctions on Oct 5th at 1pm, Andy & Rob Collection.
