1864 NEW YORK TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER
Description
517. [1864 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION] Historic newspaper, a complete issue of the New-York Tribune, 8pp, 15¼"x21", Nov 7, 1864. Featuring much national and local election coverage, page 4 contains the Union Ticket ballot for New York, including Abraham Lincoln of IL for President and Andrew Johnson of TN for Vice President. As the momentous election draws near, General Butler guarantees "A Free and Peaceful Election." Warnings are issued to illegal voters. Page one carries his "General Orders No. 1" detailing troops throughout the city to "meet existing emergencies" and instill confidence in the population where rumors are abounding of fraudulent voting and interference with the populace. He intends to establish the calm necessary "for free exercise of the duty of voting at the ensuing election..." Fraud seems to be the immediate concern in other states as well including Indiana, as political news from around the state and nation is reported. Political sermons are published by leading clergymen including Henry Ward Beecher. There is some discussion of what will happen should McClellen be elected and other articles regarding the election. Meanwhile, war news continues to dominate interest with the "Defeat of Hood" announced as "Rebel Army Repulsed in Attempting to Cross the Tennessee River." Other reports from different parts of the country are discussed, including the report of a Rebel "Copperhead Invasion - Great Excitement in the Lake Cities, Detroit, Buffalo and Cleveland..." Light general toning, a bit darker at edges; binding nicks at left edge; else in very good condition. Est: $100-200
