ANDREW JOHNSON SIGNED MILITARY DOCUMENT
Description
RARE ANDREW JOHNSON SIGNED MILITARY APPOINTMENT521. ANDREW JOHNSON (1808-1875). Seventeenth President of the United States (1865-69) succeeding to office after assassination of Lincoln. He survived impeachment by one vote. Partly printed DS as President, 1p, 15¾"x19½", Washington, DC, Apr 20, 1865. Large eagle and military vignettes at top and bottom margins. Military appointment of Charles D. Todd as "Captain by Brevet..." from Jul 23, 1864 "for gallant and meritorious service in the present campaign before Richmond, Virginia..." Signed just five days after Lincoln's assassination. Of historical note, the document had originally been dated Apr 10, 1865 and was visibly changed to "Twentieth" to coincide with Johnson's Administration. Johnson signed such commissions only until June of 1865 after which a steel stamp of his signature was used. Signature a bit uneven; light general toning; minor edgewear; else in very good condition. Est: $1000-1800
