GENERAL GRANT WRITES SIZABLE CHECK TO GENERAL OLIVER HOWARD523. ULYSSES S. GRANT (1822-1885). The Union Army's greatest general who became eighteenth President of the United States (1869-77). Partly printed DS "U.S. Grant," a bank check drawn on Jay Cooke & Co. Bankers, Washington, DC, Mar 7, 1868. Blue woodcut engraving at left margin. Made payable to "Gen. O.O. Howard" for $2000. Darkly signed and completed in his hand. OLIVER O. HOWARD (1830-1909) has endorsed on verso as "O.O. Howard, Maj. Genl." At the time Howard was commissioner of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. Light vertical fold; small slit with no paper loss at center touching single letter of "Howard" on recto; else near Fine. Est: $750-1150
