535. JAMES A. GARFIELD (1831-1881). Twentieth President of the United States (1881), serving less than four months before being mortally wounded by Charles J. Guiteau (1840?-1882) who had a history of mental illness. The last President to be born in a log cabin, he rose from poverty to brigadier general during the Civil War, elected to Congress while still in uniform, and finally to the White House. Albumen cabinet card photograph, a quarter-length portrait signed "J. A. Garfield" at lower image. Attributed to A. Bogardus, NY, with backstamp. Light slightly uneven general toning; else near Fine. Est: $750-1100
