Cobham Brewer Publisher: Selmar Hess Publisher Printing Year: 1892 Number of Volumes: Complete four volume set Notes: Bound in three-quarter leather with bright gilt embossing, this antique set is a scarce literary reference work whose stated goal it is "to supply readers and speakers with a lucid, but very brief account of such names as are used in allusions and references, whether by poets or prose writers; - to furnish those who consult it with the plot of popular dramas, the story of epic poems, and the outline of well-known tales " This work also traces the sources for the fiction discussed, as well as related historical developments. The work is profusely illustrated with plates that relate to an entry on either preceding or following page. The volumes show mild external age/wear with moisture markings to corners and edges of volume three. There is occasional signature detachment with loose individual pages. Pages show are clean and lightly age toned with marbled edges. These volumes are bound in a manner that makes them a companion set to the preceding lot #124.
