This lot features the original signed photograph shown. The piece bears an original inscription by Evalyn Walsh McLean to the wife of operatic tenor Eddy Ruhl. In the picture, Ruhl in military uniform and his wife in bridal dress are featured flanking the seated Evalyn Walsh McLean. The inscription reads: For Mrs. A. H. Ruhl with affectionate regards, Evalyn Walsh McLean, July 8th, 1943, Friendship. The photograph is signed in pencil in the lower right-hand corner, "Harris & Ewing".
Evalyn Walsh McLean was one of a kind, the feisty daughter of an Irish immigrant who struck gold – lots of gold – during the height of the rush for riches in the wild west at the turn of the century. With this new found wealth, Tom Walsh moved his family east to Washington, DC. Evalyn Walsh McLean was the last private owner of the famed Hope diamond. Eddie Ruhl performed as an operatic tenor with a professional career that spanned from the 1940's through the 1960's. Mr. Ruhl lived in the Washington, D.C. - Baltimore area before retiring to Florida. He performed internationally and was generous with wartime benefit performances in Europe. He served a term in the military during the 1950's. His recordings include: My Fair Lady (1964), The King and I (1964), Oklahoma! (1950's), South Pacific (1964). He continued to perform in smaller productions into the 1970's and upon official retirement, offered professional vocal instruction to emerging artists. The item in this lot is part of the estate of Eddie Ruhl, celebrated tenor opera star. We are selling a number of lots during this auction which include material from Mr. Ruhl's estate - see our entire catalog for more Eddie Ruhl material. This photo is in very good condition with nice patina, there is some light age/wear, the inscription and photographer's pencil signature read clearly, the picture is lightly mounted on a piece of poster paper. The photograph measures approximately 9.25" x 13.25". Shipping cost (within the lower 48 states) for this lot will be: $6.50 ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
