Author: Johnson, George H. Description: Half-plate daguerreotype. 5½x4, brass mat, glass and gilt protector, in original embossed leather-covered case, velvet liner with embossed imprint "Geo. H. Johnson, Artist, Sacramento."Fine portrait of the elegantly-dressed Sacramento gentleman about 40 years of age, likely a businessman, taken at the height of the Gold Rush. George Howard Johnson, born in New York City in 1823, is called by Carl Mautz "one of the great daguerrian artists of the gold rush era." After his years in Sacrament, he moved to San Francisco, where his noted as being active around 1860, and then to Salt Lake City.
