Japanese Satsuma ovoid jardinere, Meiji period, late 19th century, the lobed body tapering sharply to a recessed ring foot and expertly decorated in gilt and bright polychrome enamels with various flowering plants and grasses of autumn above a band of low-relief leaves, scallop-edge of the everted rim repeated on the gilt band on the high shoulder below a short neck accented with a ribbon of keyfrets, the base with a large Shimazu family crest and inscribed 'Dai-Nihon Kaga Satsuma-yaki/Heian Hyakubyakuken [ ]ko-ga, 9''h; 12''diam
