***"Copy of my dearest Daughters Letter of the dreadful Hurricane in Barbados in August 11th - 1831 Ruins of Bishops Court. I wrote yesterday... by a ship from Demerara... . I there informed you of the severe visitation this Island has experienced in one of the most dreadful & destructive Hurricanes ever known, not excepting that in 1780... our house, farmhouse &c in short everything gone except one room, our new dining room which being large is our abode... ." "Copies of letters relating to the Insurrections in Jamaica 1831. From Mr. Ricketts Agent Mr. Wm. Carey... Falmouth 10th Janry. Jamaica 1832. I have only time to to address a few lines to you. The New Year commenced with Martial Law being proclaimed, & I regret to state that nearly the whole County of Cornwall is in open rebellion. The work of destruction commenced on the night of the 27th of Decr., when the whole horizon was illuminated & it is said that not less than thirty Estates are destroyed in St. James' & Hanover, not an outpost, wharf, or mountain settlement remaining, & many of the unfortunate owners have fallen a sacrifice to the fury of the Incendiaries.".
